Rivash Soni Davnarayan posed a wildlife question this morning on #WiseOwlswildlife quiz!
Deep in Central and South American jungles, this nocturnal master of disguise hides in plain sight. By day, it freezes atop broken branches, tilting upward to mimic a dead tree stump. Its mottled ...brown feathers offer perfect camouflage. Remarkably, tiny eyelid slits let it watch for predators while sleeping. At night, it opens a comically massive, gaping mouth to swallow insects whole. Its haunting, melancholic cries echo through the trees like a ghost, terrifying unsuspecting travelers. What creature do you think this is?
Answer: Potoo Bird
Quick Facts:
1. The potoo bird comes from a very ancient lineage. Potoo fossils date back to the Eocene Epoch over 33 million years ago, showing they once lived in Europe before restricting to America.
2. Potoo’s have "Magic" Eyelids: Their eyelids feature specialized built-in slits that allow them to monitor their surroundings for danger while keeping their eyes completely closed.
3. Did you know that they have Tiny Beaks but a Giant Mouth: While their external beak looks incredibly small, their gape extends far behind their eyes, allowing them to scoop up massive flying beetles mid-air!
4. Heres an interesting fact here, In many regions, they are known as urutaú or (ghost bird), and indigenous folklore tells tales of their melancholic, human-like cries being a spirit longing for the moon. And,
5. Potoos form devoted monogamous pairs and perfectly share the exhausting duties of incubating the egg and tending to the chick.
