Which carnivorous plant, native to the Carolinas, uses hinged leaves and sensitive hairs to snap shut on prey in less than a second?
Answer: Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)
Quick ...Fact:
Native to a small area around the Carolinas, the Venus flytrap thrives in nutrient-poor bogs using a high-speed "snap-trap" that shuts in less than a second. To conserve energy, the plant "counts" sensor touches to confirm prey before sealing, then uses specialized enzymes to digest its meal over several days. Because each trap is disposable and can only function a few times, the plant constantly grows new ones to continue its unique carnivorous cycle. The plant eats flys, ants, beetles and grasshoppers!
