Rivash Soni Davnarayan posed a wildlife question this morning on#WiseOwls!
This is a famous creature native to the vast landscapes of Australia. It belongs to a special class of mammals known as mars-upials, which means they have a built-in pocket to carry young. It doesnt run or walk, ...instead, It uses incredibly powerful hind legs to hop across the outback at high speeds. Having a tight-knit family group called a "mob," they use their massive, muscular tails like an extra leg for balance.
What creature do you think this is?
Answer: Kangaroo
Quick Facts:
1. Did you know that when a baby kangaroo (called a joey) is born, it is completely hairless, blind, and weighs less than two grams. That is roughly the size of a single jellybean or a grape! It must immediately crawl through its mother’s fur into the pouch entirely on its own.
2. Kangaroos also cannot walk or hop backwards. Because of their massive, elongated feet and heavy tails, their bodies are strictly built for forward momentum and because of this, they actually became Patriotic Symbol: Because they cannot move backward, the kangaroo was chosen to feature on the Australian coat of arms. It symbolizes a nation that is always moving forward.
3. A kangaroo's tail is incredibly strong. When moving slowly to graze, they use their tail as a propulsive fifth leg, pushing off the ground with as much force as their actual limbs combined.
4. Now listen to this, Female kangaroos have an amazing superpower called embryonic dia-pause. Where If environmental conditions are bad (like a severe drought) or if she already has a joey in her pouch, she can put her pregnancy on "pause" until conditions improve.
