Question: Its the only one in the animal kingdom who can hit the reset button. When it gets old or sick it simply transforms back into its infant polyp state and starts its life cycle all over again. ...What do you think this is?
Answer: The Immortal jellyfish!
Quick Facts:
1. The immortal jellyfish has a cool age reversal feature. When faced with stress, injury, or old age, this jellyfish can transform its adult cells back into an earlier stage of development, essentially turning back into a "baby". This process, called transdifferentiation, allows it to restart its life cycle indefinitely.
2. Theyre actually quite tiny. The immortal jellyfish, Despite its legendary name, its about the size of a pinky fingernail. Fully grown adults usually measure only 4.5 millimetres in diameter.
3. They are known as Global Hitchhikers: Originally from the Mediterranean, they have spread to oceans worldwide by hitching rides in the ballast water of cargo ships.
4. However, immortal Jellyfish are Not Truly Invincible: While they can't die of old age, they aren't invincible. They can still be eaten by predators or killed by disease before they have a chance to reset their life cycle. AND,
5. They’re cute actually, They are transparent but have a bright red or orange stomach visible through their bell. Adults can have between 80 and 90 tentacles, while juveniles start with only eight.
